Average apartment rent in May

According to Tokyo Kantei, the average monthly rent of an apartment in greater Tokyo in May increased by 0.1% from last month to 2,530 Yen per square meter. In Tokyo City, the average monthly rent in May was 2,979 Yen/sqm, up just 1 Yen from last month, but 2.2% higher than it was in May 2012. The average rent in Tokyo's 23 wards was 3,086 Yen/sqm, up 0.1% from last month and 2.2% from last year.Read more


April rental data - Tokyo Kantei

Tokyo Kantei announced the latest data on rental prices for condominium apartments across Japan. In greater Tokyo, the average monthly rent was 2527 Yen/sqm, down 0.6% from last month, but up 0.9% from April of 2012.

In Tokyo, the average rent did not change from the previous month but was up 1.6% from last year.

In the Kinki Region (Osaka, Hyogo Prefecture) rents are up by 5.8% from April 2012. In Osaka, the average rent of 1898 Yen/sqm in April saw little change from the month before but is 6.3% higher than last year. Rents in Kobe City are up by a staggering 9.5% from last year.Read more


Rents up across Japan

According to Tokyo Kantei, the average rent for a condominium apartment (one with a private landlord, rather than a rental-only building) increased in Japan's three major regions in December.

The average monthly rent in greater Tokyo (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba) in December increased by 3.0% from the previous month to 2,540 Yen/sqm, although it remains 1.1% lower than December 2011.Read more


Apartment rents reach 7 year low in Tokyo

The average apartment rent across Japan's major cities has fallen even further. In July, the average rent for a condominium in Tokyo's 23-ku fell below 3,000 Yen/sqm a month for the first time in over seven years. The rent in rental-only buildings has also fallen.

According to Tokyo Kantei, the average rent for a condominium apartment in July was 2,995 Yen/sqm a month, down 1.8% from July 2011.Read more

Tokyo Kantei announced the average apartment rent across Japan's three major metropolitan areas - Greater Tokyo, the Kinki region (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara) and the Chubu region (Aichi, Nagano, Shizuoka, etc). Tokyo and Chubu both saw a fall in the average rent, but the Kinki region saw an increase of 2.4% in 2011. Compared to the average rent of 1622 Yen/sqm/month in 2009, the rent in the Kinki region has increased by 6.5% over the past 2 years. This is said to be the result of an increase in newer apartments from 2010.Read more


Apartment rent falls again in November

According to Tokyo Kantei, the average apartment rent in Japan's three largest cities fell again in November.

In greater Tokyo, the average monthly rent fell 0.7% from the previous month to 2533 Yen/sqm. This is the fourth month of continual decline. In Tokyo City, rent fell by 0.6% to 2924 Yen/sqm.  Kanagawa Prefecture saw the average monthly rent rise by 1.1% to 2044 Yen/sqm.Read more


Rent for condominium-type apartments down in June

According to Tokyo Kantei, the average monthly rent for a condominium-type apartment in greater Tokyo for the month of June has fallen compared to the previous month.

Average Rent:

  • Tokyo City: 2960 Yen/sqm, down 0.5%
  • Kanagawa: 2027 Yen/sqm, down 0.6%
  • Saitama: 1620 Yen/sqm, down 1.6%
  • Chiba: 1593 Yen/sqm, down 0.2%
