Historic ryokan in Gunma to be demolished this month

The Kazawa-kan Ryokan in Tsumagoi, Gunma, is scheduled to be demolished in the coming months. The traditional inn suffered serious damage due to a landslide caused by the Typhoon Hagibis in October 2019. Facing an astronomical repair bill and with the recent pandemic decimating the local tourism market, the 4th-generation owner made the difficult decision to cease operations.

Singapore investor makes headlines after buying forestry in Gunma

An investor from Singapore has been the subject of an article in the Yomiuri newspaper after purchasing 44 hectares of forestry in Gunma Prefecture. The land, which is near the source of the Agatsuma River in Tsumagoi Village, was purchased by the investor in September 2011.

An employee from the Tokyo-based real estate agency that brokered the sale said the purchase formed part of the buyer's overall investment plan, but there was no indication that the buyer was after a water source.Read more


Gunma also targeting foreign buyers of forestry

On February 8, the Gunma prefectural governor held a press conference to announce that they are considering introducing regulations to help preserve the forestry and natural water sources in the area.

This follows on from similar movements by other prefectural governments, including Hokkaido and Saitama, who are starting to monitor the purchase of large tracts of forest by foreign buyers.Read more


Brick warehouse in Gunma at risk of demolition

A 90 year old red-brick warehouse built during the Taisho period in Ora Town, Gunma, is at risk of being demolished in the near future.

The building was once used in the production of "nakanogasuri" - a style of cloth-weaving dyed with wooden patterns, and is now owned by the JA Oura Tatebayashi Agricultural Cooperative (JA). The warehouse suffered structural damage during the Tohoku earthquake and the owner has expressed intent to demolish the structure.Read more
