More arrests as land swindles continue

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has arrested three people on suspicion of defrauding a local real estate brokerage of up to 200 million Yen from a land sale back in 2018.

At the center of the alleged swindle is a 360 sqm plot of vacant land in Mejiro, Toshima Ward. One of the alleged swindlers was an employee of the seller’s real estate company who acted as the point of contact for the transaction. That employee set up a separate company, with the same name as the real estate company they were working in, and had the buyer transfer the purchase funds into the new company’s bank account.

The seller became aware of the fraud when the funds did not arrive in their correct bank account by the deadline.

The three accused all deny the allegations.
