According to Tokyo Kantei, the average monthly rent of a condominium apartment in greater Tokyo was 2,545 Yen/sqm in September, down 0.2% from the previous month but up 2.7% from last year. The average apartment size was 59.31 sqm (638 sqft) and the average apartment age was 18.8 years.

In Tokyo’s 23-ku, the average monthly rent was 3,095 Yen/sqm, down 1 Yen from August but up 3.0% from last year. The average apartment size was 56.20 sqm and the average age was 17.6 years.

Rents in Osaka City are up 3.2% from last month and are up 12.7% from last year. The increase is due mainly to a number of transactions of comparatively expensive apartments in Kita-ku.

Average monthly rent/sqm by area:

  • Tokyo 23-ku: 3,095 Yen (0% from August; +3.0% from September 2012)
  • Yokohama City: 2,151 Yen (-0.4%; -0.7%)
  • Saitama City: 1,817 Yen (+1.3%; +2.7%)
  • Chiba City: 1,502 Yen (-0.3%; +2.7%)
  • Osaka City: 2,177 Yen (+3.2%; +12.7%)
  • Kobe City: 1,786 Yen (-3.4%; +3.0%)
  • Nagoya City: 1,634 Yen (+0.2%; +3.4%)
