This is a compact urban home designed by Yoshimura Junzo (1907-1997). Yoshimura got his start working at Antonin Raymond’s office before being transferred to Pennsylvania in 1940 for two years. He established his own architectural office after returning in the 1940s. His past clients have included the Rockefeller family and the Imperial Household. Yoshimura is one of Japan’s great modernist architects and his homes are often sought-after by collectors.
Yoshimura Junzo house in Nishiazabu demolished
A house designed by modernist architect Yoshimura Junzo (1907-1997) in central Tokyo’s Nishiazabu neighbourhood has been demolished.
The ‘Tagakicho House’ was built in 1968 and was a 2-storey reinforced concrete house with a basement. The total size of the house was 624 sqm (6,714 sq.ft). It was constructed by Takenaka Corporation - one of Japan’s biggest construction companies.Read more

There are very few chances in a lifetime to buy a modernist home in Japan, and opportunities are going to become even more limited in coming years as these homes are gradually demolished by their owners. Although most are sold for land value with little to no market value placed on the structures themselves, these homes are irreplaceable.
