Renzo Piano to design replacement for Kunio Maekawa-designed building
Tokio Marine Holdings has announced that Italian architect Renzo Piano will be designing the replacement for the Tokyo Marine Nichido Insurance Building in Marunouchi, Tokyo.
Marunouchi’s first high-rise to be demolished
Another building by an iconic architect is destined for the wrecking ball. This time it is the first high-rise to have been built in the Marunouchi business district in front of Tokyo Station.
MUFG to rebuild Marunouchi HQ
MUFG Bank is planning to redevelop their headquarter building in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district. Plans are expected to be firmed up by 2022 with a construction schedule to be announced at a later date.
Tokyo's office construction boom and it's repercussions
The construction of new office buildings in central Tokyo is steadily progressing. In January, Mitsubishi Jisho's Marunouchi Eiraku Building was completed. In Spring, JP Tower and the Palace Building were completed, and Otemachi Financial City will be completed in fall.
According to the Urban Research Institute Corporation, the total supply of commercial office space in 2012 will reach 2,680,000 sqm (28,836,800 sqft). This is close to the past decade's peak of 2,980,000 sqm in 2003. A quarter of the office supply is located in the Marunouchi area on the western side of Tokyo Station.Read more
Palace Hotel set to reopen in May, 2012
The Palace Hotel reconstruction project is expected to be completed in 2012 with the "Palace Hotel Tokyo" scheduled to start accepting hotel guests from May 17, 2012. The new hotel will be 23 stories and will have 290 hotel rooms. The rooms start from 45 sqm in size (484 sqft), which is much larger than the typical Japanese hotel room.Read more
