Orix to open 70-room hot spring resort in Hakone

On August 7, Orix Hotels & Resorts announced that they are opening a 70-room hot spring resort near Gora Station, Hakone, in late 2020.

The ryokan-style resort will have four 3 and 4-story buildings with a total building area of 10,000 sqm. All guest rooms will have their own private outdoor rotenburo baths. There will also be two large shared baths on the top floor providing guests with outstanding views of the scenery Hakone is famous for.

Construction started in mid-2017 and the resort is scheduled to open in Autumn 2020. The project was designed by Irie Miyake Architects & Engineers. This firm has also worked on Ark Hills Sengokuyama Mori Tower, Omotesando Hills, Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Park Hyatt Shanghai.

Although much of the Gora district is on steep hillside, this location offers relatively flat access with a 3-minute walk from Gora Station. The site is 7,200 sqm.

This will be the second resort that Orix has developed in Hakone. In 2017 they opened the Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori overlong Lake Ashi. Orix operates 22 hotels and ryokans across Japan with a total of 5,000 rooms.

In 2018, a particularly harsh summer season saw tourist numbers in Hakone drop 1.2% to 21.26 million. On the flip side, the town recorded the highest number of foreign hotel guests in history with 596,000 guests in 2018, a 9.2% increase from 2017. This is the 6th year in a row to set a record. The town’s busiest month of the year is November.
