This is the former holiday villa of Hirakushi Denchu (1872-1979). He was a noted sculptors, appointed as an Imperial Household Artist in 1944, named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1954, and awarded the Order of Cultural Merit i 1962. His home and atelier in Yanaka, Tokyo, has been preserved as a museum. Denchu continued creating works of art up until his death at the age of 107. His works can be seen today in the lobby of the National Theatre, and in Asakusa’s Sensoji temple.

The home is located in a historic enclave of just 10 lots, and sits above the Great Gatsby-style villa built for Tokushichi Nomura II (founder of the Nomura Group) in 1939. This particular neighborhood was developed as a holiday home area in the 1920s and 1930s, and is unique for its cobblestone street and steep stone-block retaining walls. Apparently these cobblestones were installed by the US military during the post-war occupation as the streets surrounding the confiscated Atami Hotel became too muddy and slippery in the rain.

The traditional Japanese house was originally single-story, with a second floor added at a later date. The two rooms on the second floor have ocean views. Earthquake reinforcing was carried out by a shrine carpenter in 2013.

The property comes with an onsen hot spring water supply. That onsen water can be pumped into the house’s stone bath on the ground floor. There are costs involved when using this hot spring water:
