This is one of only a handful of residences in Tokyo designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando.

The 3-story reinforced concrete building was designed with three self-contained residences under one roof. The half-circle stark concrete exterior provides privacy from the street, while the residences themselves look into private courtyards.

The home was built by Satohide Corporation, an experienced builder of luxury homes across Japan.

About the Seijo neighborhood:

Seijo is one of Japan’s leading affluent residential neighborhoods filled with wide, tree-lined avenues and large homes. It’s also a desirable school district. It’s also famous for having some strict residential bylaws designed to preserve the character of the area. There are rules covering hedges, trees, minimum lot sizes, not allowing basements, distance from neighbors, apartment building sizes, etc. Locals are highly vested in keeping the neighborhood as it is, with volunteer groups going around to remove fallen leaves in Autumn.

It was developed as a residential neighborhood thanks to the efforts of education reformer Kuniyoshi Obara who purchased 16 acres of land which would become part of the Seijo Gakuen school. Once just fields and trees, it quickly transformed as many literary figures moved in and built homes. There were 40 homes here in 1927, coinciding with the opening of Seijogakuen-mae Station. The opening of the Toho Studios (home of Godzilla) film lot in 1932 saw the great producers and actors of the time take up residence in Seijo.

The Seijo address itself covers 226 hectares. As of November 2020 there were 10,569 households in the Seijo address and a population of 23,182. The Seijo 6 Chome address has the lowest density in Seijo’s 9 Chome districts, with 5,058 people per square kilometer. That’s about half of the average for Seijo and a third of the average for Setagaya Ward as a whole. 

Heading to Hakone for a day at the hot springs? Seijogakuen-mae is one of the stops on the Romancecar train, getting you to Hakone-Yumoto Station in 1hr 20 minutes.
