Tokyu’s main department store and adjoining Bunkamura hall facility in Shibuya will be demolished in 2023 to make way for a new development.

The redevelopment will be carried out by Tokyu Land, Tokyu Department Store, and LVMH-related L Catterton.

The 9-story department store opened in 1967. It, along with the recently-closed Tokyu Toyoko department store above Shibuya Station, were the two leading department stores in Shibuya. The Toyoko store closed in 2020 as part of the station’s large-scale redevelopment.

Bunkamura opened in 1989. It includes the 2,150-seat Orchard Hall, 747-seat Theatre Cocoon, museum and cinema.

Tokyu acquired the land in 1964 from Jinnan Elementary School, completing the department store three years later. The site of Bunkamura was originally the department store’s car park. This store became the brand’s new main store, taking the title from their store above Shibuya Station. Annual sales in 2008 topped 124.3 billion Yen, making it the 8th largest department store in Japan in terms of sales.
