About the architect:
Kyoto-born Seiichi Shirai (1905-1983) designed numerous private residences, hospitals, hotels, and public buildings across Japan between the 1930s and 1980s. Two of his most famous works are the NOA Building in Azabudai, Tokyo (1974), and the Shoto Museum in Shibuya (1980). Sadly, many of his works have since been demolished. Before opening his own architectural practice, he went to Germany to study gothic architecture and philosophy at Berlin University.
