Romanee 80 was designed by Von Jour Caux, aka Japan’s Gaudi, and built in 1980. The 7-story pencil building is right beside a 120-meter tall commercial project that will be home to the 272-room Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya when it opens in early 2023. It is also across the street from the Tokyu Honten Department Store which is planned to be redeveloped into a 160-meter tall mixed-use tower containing a new luxury hotel by The House Collective, with completion tentatively scheduled for 2027.

About the architect:
Von Jour Caux formed an artist collective in the 1970s called Art Complex and they went on to design some highly decorative buildings around Tokyo, often featuring floral, animal, and body part motifs. His most well-known work may be the Waseda El Dorado ‘Rhythms of Vision’ apartment building in Shinjuku.
