This is a two-story wooden house located right next door to the historic former Iseya Pawnshop.

The property is essentially being advertised as land ‘with old building’. This is standard practice in the industry with older buildings. It means there are no warranties provided on the structure itself, with the expectation that a buyer would demolish and build something new. There are no construction requirements with the land and the buyer is free to use their own builder and build something to their own specifications and subject to construction and zoning laws. 

It fronts onto the 7.1-meter wide Kikuzaka Street. This area was once home to a number of chrysanthemum (kiku) growers, which is how it got its name. In the early 1900s, this neighborhood was popular with Japan’s literary greats. One of those was author Ichiyo Higuchi. Featured on the 5,000 Yen banknote, Higuchi lived nearby and mentioned the neighboring Iseya Pawnshop in her writing.

About the neighbor:

The former Iseya Pawnshop was in business from 1860 to 1982. The white storehouse on the corner dates from the Bakumatsu era (1850s ~ 1860s) and was relocated from Adachi to this location in 1887. The wooden shophouse was built in 1907, and the property includes a tatami room dating from 1890. The property had been in the same family for over 120 years. In 2014, news broke that the owner was planning to demolish the heritage-listed buildings and sell the land to a real estate developer. Luckily, a university stepped in and acquired the property a few months later. It is now open to the public.
