On December 16, Acao Spa & Resort announced plans for a 16 billion Yen (US$117 million) oceanfront luxury resort and artist colony in Atami.

The project site adjoins the former Hotel New Akao. The aging hotel and its newer annex building were sold to a subsidiary of Fortress Investment Group last month.

Acao owns over 650,000 sqm of cliffside land that fronts onto Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Plans are to create several high-end accommodations designed by Kengo Kuma, along with 20 hotel villas, and an open-style office and gallery space.

The accommodations could be up and running by 2027.
