On July 5, NTT Urban Development Corporation announced a management agreement with Capella Hotels & Resorts to open Capella Kyoto in the Higashiyama district.

The hotel is located on the site of a former public elementary school. It forms part of a larger redevelopment that includes the demolition of the historic Miyagawacho Kaburenjo geisha theatre dating from 1916. That theatre will be rebuilt into a new cultural facility.

Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, the 4-story hotel will have 92 rooms, a restaurant, spa, and banquet facilities. Opening is scheduled for 2025.

The Capella brand has hotels located in international cities across the world. The luxury hotel brand will join Six Senses and Banyan Tree, both of whom are planning to open high-end hotels in Higashiyama in the next few years.
