Ryugu, the Kumamoto Prefecture-based operator of Hotel Ryugu, is planning to open a luxury resort on Maejima Island.

Construction began last month on the Amakusa Amanojaku luxury hotel. It sits on a 4,790 sqm site adjoining Hotel Ryugu. The 6-story hotel will have a total floor area of 2,690 sqm.

The 11 suites will range in size from 100 ~ 150 sqm (1,076 ~ 1,614 sq.ft). All rooms will have their own indoor onsen baths, with some rooms having outdoor rotenburo baths. The hotel will also have a restaurant and spa salon for guests. Nightly rates with two meals are expected to be between the 50,000 ~ 80,000 Yen (US$385 ~ 615) range per person.

The total investment is expected to be between 1.2 ~ 1.3 billion Yen (approx. US$9.2 ~ 10 million).

Maejima Island in Kumamoto Prefecture forms part of the Amakusa Matsushima island chain, and is known for its scenic beauty. It was developed into a hot spring resort area from the late 1960s onwards after the Five Bridges of Amakusa were completed.
