On April 21, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced the construction plans for the area around the recently opened Takanawa Gateway Station. A total of four high-rises and one low-rise building will be completed by 2024 ~ 2025.

The tentatively-named Takanawa Gateway City covers a 9.5-hectare site in front of the station. Architect Kengo Kuma has designed a low-rise cultural facility with an undulating shape that will have plants that can be enjoyed throughout the changing seasons. The rooftop garden will include a foot-bath.

The four high-rise towers include two 29 and 30-story commercial towers in front of Takanawa Gateway Station, a 166-meter tall, 31-story office tower, and a 172-meter tall, 44-story apartment building that will also house an international school. The interiors of the residential building are designed by Hirsch-Bedner Associates (HBA). HBA designed the interiors of the Four Seasons Hotel, Kyoto and Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo.

Marriott International will be opening a 200-room JW Marriott on floors 22 to 30 of the 158m tall South Building. This will be the first JW Marriott-branded hotel in the greater Tokyo area.

During groundworks, old stone walls from the former Takanawa Embankment were unearthed. These were traces from Japan’s first railroad that was built along this section of the bay in 1872. Sections of the historic masonry have been preserved and incorporated into the landscaping of the new project.
