Six Senses and Banyan Tree will both be opening luxury hotels in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district in 2024. Both hotels will be the first of their kind in Japan.

The Six Senses site was originally Hotel Tozankaku and is across the street from the Four Seasons. The old hotel opened in 1958 and closed in December 2019. It was demolished in 2020. A luxury hotel has been planned for this site since 2018. In April, the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper reported a Six Senses was also planned for the winter ski resort town of Niseko, with opening tentatively scheduled for 2024 ~ 2025.

Kyoto Higashiyama Banyan Tree, pictured above, is planned for the site of the former Hotel Ryozen. Hotel Ryozen was built in the 1960s and 1980s and had 29 guest rooms. It is a 650 meters walk to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and 1 kilometer from the Gion district. The new hotel will be designed by Kengo Kuma.
