Developer Samty Co., Ltd. announced some additional details on Shangri-La Hotel’s plan to open a luxury, low-rise hotel in Kyoto.

The hotel will tentatively be named Shangri-La Kyoto Nijojo. It is about a 10-minute taxi ride from Kyoto Station, or a 9-minute walk from Nijojo-mae Station. The plans are for a 4-story hotel with 80 ~ 100 rooms. The land is 5,840 sqm. Construction is scheduled to start in January 2022 with opening in December 2024 (subject to change). This will be Shangri-La’s second hotel in Japan. They have been operating the Shangri-La Tokyo since 2009.

Back in June 2019 it was reported that the hotelier had acquired a large vacant lot on the northern side of Nijo Castle for an undisclosed price. The land was previously owned by developer Open House Group. They had purchased it in 2017 for an undisclosed amount.

Although we do not know the purchase price, and such information is not accessible, a similar, although slightly smaller hotel site just 95 meters along the street sold recently for 850,000 Yen/sqm.

A rebound in domestic travel is expected once the coronavirus vaccines are thoroughly rolled out. Inbound tourism is also expected to return with a vengeance when international travel resumes to normal levels. In 2019, Kyoto City was visited by 53.25 million tourists, the 7th year in a row to exceed the 50 million level. The Japan Tourism Agency estimated that 9.65 million of them spent at least one night in a city hotel, and 37% of those guests were foreigners.

Last November, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, part of the Luxury Collection by Marriott International hotels, opened on the eastern side of Nijo Castle.
