Two 260-meter tall high-rise towers are rumored for Shinjuku Station. If completed, they would exceed the height of the nearby 243-meter Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

The joint effort between railroad companies, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and local Shinjuku government would see the project completed sometime in the 2040s. The twin towers would straddle the northern end of Shinjuku Station, with an open-air deck providing easier access to the JR and Odakyu train platforms below.

Details on one tower have been released. The 48-story, 260-meter tall building will include office and retail. If approved, construction is expected to start in 2022 with completion by 2029.

Shinjuku Station sees around 3.8 million passengers a day. To date, developments around the station have been carried out on an individual basis, resulting in a disjointed labyrinth of underground malls and department stores.
