Plans for a 190m tall, 50-storey, 750-unit apartment tower on the manmade island of Tsukishima in Tokyo Bay have local residents up in arms.
With over 80% of landowners in agreement, plans for the Tsukishima 3 Chome South District Redevelopment were submitted to Chuo Ward with a town planning decision approved in February 2018. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in 2021 with completion by 2024.
Residents opposed to the development have filed a law suit seeking the cancellation of the town planning decision. Their concerns are that the neighborhood will lose its ‘shitamachi’ downtown vibe that is characterized by small, wooden homes and narrow laneways.
A 199m tall, 1120-unit apartment building is also planned for a nearby site to the north. The Tsukishima 3 Chome North District Redevelopment is due to start construction in 2022 with completion by 2025.
