Mori Trust announced on November 25 that they had acquired the site of Hotel Rantei in Kyoto from Kyoto Century Hotel for an undisclosed sum.

The traditional Japanese-style hotel has been closed since January, 2010, but will undergo a full refurbishment before being re-opened as a luxury hotel by 2013 – 2014. Once it is opened, they hope to attract wealthy domestic and foreign tourists.

Hotel Rantei first opened in 1963. It is located in the famous Arashiyama area and is adjacent to the Hozugawa River, Kameyama Park, and the Hogonin and Tenryuji Temples. The area is a particularly popular spot for viewing the autumn leaves. The hotel has 20 rooms and can accommodate 60 guests, but Mori Trust plans to add an additional 15 rooms.

Starting from the Heian Period (794 – 1185), the Arashiyama area was a popular vacation home neighborhood for Japan’s nobility.
