According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the new housing starts for the 6 prefectures in Tohoku had increased by 18.5% to 4523 units in August, compared to the same month in 2010. This is the second continuous month of increases.
The number of “my-homes” built by home-owners increased by 30% to 2727 units. The increase of these new houses for each prefecture in Tohoku is as follows:
– Miyagi: 56.8% increase (792 units)
– Aomori: 37.3% (405 units)
– Yamagata: 28.8% (309 units)
– Fukushima: 27.8% (603 units)
– Iwate: 17.8% (398 units)
Akita Prefecture was the only area to see a decrease in new private housing starts with the number of units falling 10.9% to 220.
The number of homes built by developers (bunjo-jutaku) in Tohoku fell by 25.7% to 347 units. However, if you include rental “apaato” type properties, the total for the area increased by 18.6% to 1437 units. There were zero condominium apartment buildings built. The only area which saw an increase in developer-built housing was Fukushima Prefecture which increased two-fold to 82 units.
The total supply of new housing for the nation was 81,986 units in August – an increase of 14%.
