About the neighborhood:
This was a Samurai district during the Edo period. In 1868, two enterprising individuals applies for land leases to convert the neighborhood into a red light district to cater to the nearby foreign settlement in Tsukiji. Failing to attract enough customers, the brothels were closed in 1871 and shifted to Taito ward. The area was then named Shintomi-cho and machiya-type townhouses began to spring up on small plots of land. The opening of the Shintomi-za theatre in 1878 saw the area flourish with tea houses. In 1922, Shintomi-cho had 10 restaurants, 40 meeting places, and 80 geisha dwellings. By the 1930s there were 6 ‘ryotei’ Japanese restaurants, over 60 geisha dwellings and 180 registered geisha. The red light district essentially went out of business after WWII. Nowadays it is primarily a commercial district with a mix of residents, and small-to-medium shops and businesses.
