ABOUT

This house sold in August 2019 and is no longer available.

An unusual find in Tokyo – a house designed by modernist architect Sakakura Junzo (1901-1969).

The 3-Bedroom gable-roof family home sits on an elevated hillside position, with a sunny, southerly aspect and views over the neighborhood below. It was built in 1963, with an extension (a downstairs study) added in 1973. The extension was designed by Nishizawa Fumitaka (1915-1986). Nishizawa was the first employee of Sakakura’s architectural practice, and became the director of the firm after Sakakura’s death.

With a total floor area of 171.97 sqm (1,850 sq.ft), the house includes a living area, kitchen, study and family bathroom on the ground floor, with three bedrooms and an additional toilet on the second floor. The living room opens out onto the landscaped garden.

In 2013, the house was earthquake-retrofitted.

Repairs and renovations or modernizations may be required.

Floor sizes:

  • B1F: 9.9 sqm (107 sq.ft)

About the architect:

Sakakura Junzo worked in Le Corbusier’s atelier in Paris for seven years, obtaining the position of studio chief.  He returned to Japan in 1936 and opened his own architectural practice in 1940. One of his first works to come out of his studio was the Iihashi Residence built in 1941. The house was located in Setagaya, Tokyo, before being relocated in 2007 to its current location in Karuizawa where it operates as the Domaine de Mikuni restaurant.

In 1953 he designed artist Taro Okamoto’s residence in Omotesando. The house is now open as a memorial museum. In 1959 he worked with Le Corbusier on the celebrated National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo.

One of his more celebrated works is the International House of Japan which was designed in collaboration with Maekawa Kunio and Yoshimura Junzo.
