About Kita Kamakura

When taking the train from Tokyo to Kamakura, Kita-Kamakura is one station before Kamakura. It’s a popular stop for its proximity to Engaku-ji Temple and a shop and cafe-lined walk that takes visitors down to Kencho-ji Temple and finally Hachiman-gu Shrine. It doesn’t draw the same insane crowds that use Kamakura Station, resulting in a much quieter and more pleasant living environment. Kita-Kamakura Station is 53 minutes direct from Tokyo Station on the Yokosuka Line, and 4 minutes to Kamakura Station. Kita-Kamakura Station has about 9,000 passengers per day, while JR Kamakura Station has around 45,000 per day. 

The Yamanouchi area (more commonly referred to as Kita Kamakura) flourished during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) with the founding of nearby Engaku-ji (1282), Kencho-ji (1253) and Meigetsu-in (1394). Many influential samurai also took up residence in this neighbourhood. Even today there has been little in the way of large-scale redevelopment, resulting in quiet, winding streets and lots of greenery and untouched mountain-side.
