About Higashi Gotanda 5 Chome:
This small residential enclave was originally home to some of Tokyo’s most wealthy and elite residents. Original residents include the president of the Matsuzakaya Department Store who built a home in 1936 which is now used as the Indonesian Ambassador’s residence. Also, the family home of the Empress of Japan was located in this neighbourhood. The house has been demolished and is now a small public park.
Lot sizes in this area are large, and roads are generously wide and laid out in a simple grid pattern.
