US$4 million country-homes in Hokkaido to entice foreign buyers

A Tokyo-based real estate company plans to build a number of luxury farm-style houses in Hokkaido to sell to wealthy foreigners. Sales began on September 1, with homes priced from 420 million Yen (approx. 4 million USD).

Biei Villa Rubeshibe Hill is a planned development of 15 homes to be built between now and 2022. They will be located on a 46,000 sqm site located 9 kilometers south of Biei, or a 5-minute drive from Bibaushi Station on the JR Furano Line. By car, it is about a 2.5-hour drive from Sapporo City.

The two-storey wood-frame houses will range in size from 350 ~ 500 sqm (3,766 ~ 5,380 sq.ft). Owners may be able to rent out their homes to holiday-makers, with guests provided with 24-hr butler services. Overnight rental rates are expected to be between 200,000 ~ 400,000 Yen (approx. 1,890 ~ 3,775 USD) depending on the season.

It is hoped that these homes will encourage wealthy foreign tourists, who mostly stick to Niseko, to consider the more northern parts of Hokkaido.

Biei is known for its rolling hills and fields of flowers. It has a population of 9,967 residents, down from a peak of over 20,000 residents in 1960. The town had 1.679 million tourists in 2017.
