On February 7, Mitsui Fudosan released details on a luxury hotel planned for the eastern side of Nijo Castle in Kyoto.

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto (Kyoto Nijo Hotel Project) is located on a 7,000 sqm site that was once home to the Mitsui family from the late 1600s up until the mid-1900s. Mitsui Fudosan acquired the property in 2015.

The landscape will incorporate traditional features such as a tiled-roof gate and garden ornaments. The hotel will have 161 rooms with an average size of over 50 sqm (538 sq.ft), and a presidential suite of 210 sqm (2,260 sq.ft). There will also be a 1,000 sqm spa, signature restaurants, concierge, valet parking and 24hr room service. The lobby and room interiors are designed by André Fu of AFSO, while master planning is by architect Akira Kuryu.

The hotel is scheduled to open in mid-2020.

The site was previously home to the Kyoto Kokusai Hotel. The hotel closed its doors in 2014, ending 53-years of operations. It was sold to Hankyu Real Estate in December 2014. Hankyu planned to redevelop the site into an apartment building, but the city insisted that a hotel was more suitable given its prime location and the shortage in hotel rooms at the time. Hankyu then sold the development site to Mitsui.

Construction in March 2019
