On October 1, real estate corporation HULIC opened their latest small luxury resort near Lake Kawaguchi. ‘Fufu Kawaguchiko’ is part of HULIC’s Fufu brand of luxury ryokans.
HULIC entered the luxury ryokan business in mid-2015 with the acquisition of two small luxury hotels in Hakone and Atami for approximately 4 billion Yen (33.6 million USD at the time). They plan to open a total of 10 high-end ryokans all located in key tourist destinations within 1.5 ~ 2 hours from Tokyo with a total investment of 30 ~ 40 billion Yen (approx. 260 ~ 350 million USD).
Fufu Kawaguchiko has been under development for the past three years. The resort is located just 500 meters from the shore of Lake Kawaguchi and sits on a 17,000 sqm south-facing site. The 32 guest suites are spread across four buildings, each with their own private open-air bath and views of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt. Fuji. Nightly room rates start from 45,900 ~ 54,000 Yen per person
The company will open additional luxury ryokans in Nara (30 rooms, 2020 open), Nikko (24 rooms, 2020 open), Kyoto (45 rooms, 2020 open), and Gora (43 rooms, 2021 open). They are also considering locations in Kanagawa’s Miura Peninsula, Chiba’s Boso Peninsula and Shizuoka’s Izu region.
