Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari Co., Ltd. acquired Hotel Mizuhatei in Atami City on September 12 for an undisclosed sum. The 11-storey hotel is located alongside the No. 135 National Highway and overlooks Sagami Bay.

The 64-room hotel opened in 1951, but closed last month. In 2012, Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari opened up their first hotel in the Atami. Hotel Mizuhatei is their second acquisition. They operate a number of hotels in Japan’s resort areas, particularly in the Izu / Shizuoka region. The company is planning to completely refurbish the hotel with a re-opening scheduled for Spring 2017.

Atami is said to be one of Japan’s top three hot spring resorts, with origins as an onsen destination dating back 1,250 years. Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder and ruler of Japan’s Tokugawa shogunate, was quite fond of the hot spring water in Atami and is said to have contributed to its development in the late 1500s/early 1600s.

In 2015, Atami City received 3.07 million overnight visitors. This was the fourth year in a row to record an annual increase, and the first time in 13 years that the number had exceeded 3 million. In the first half of 2016, the city was ranked as the most popular hot spring resort area in Japan by Rakuten Travel.
