Kyoto Kiyomizu Hotel

A 83-year old former elementary school building in Kyoto will be renovated and converted into a luxury, 40-room boutique hotel. On May 20, Kyoto City announced that they will sign a 60-year lease with NTT Urban Development Corporation. NTT will pay an annual rent of 65 million Yen (590,000 USD) for the building and land.

The former Kyoto Municipal Kiyimizu Elementary School building was built in 1933. The modernist building is a blend of Japanese and European architectural styles. The 3-storey, 4,200 sqm building sits on a 7,300 sqm block of land and is 1,300 meters from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station. It closed in 2010.

Interest in the site was high, with the city receiving applications from 10 developers during the bidding period.

As part of the lease agreement, the style and character of the existing building’s exterior must be either preserved or replicated. The building’s use must be for hotel or wedding function centre use.
