Nippon Steel City Produce and Mitsui are redeveloping the Harajuku Danchi apartments alongside Gaien Nishidori in Shibuya-ku’s Jingumae 3 Chome neighborhood.

The original 6 buildings were completed in 1957. The buildings were considered modern for their time and were a landmark for the area. Due to aging and deterioration, reconstruction plans were made and the apartments were vacated in 2010.

Takenaka Corporation will be planning and constructing the new building which has an expected completion date of September, 2013. The new apartment tower will be 18 stories with 220 units and a total floor area of 26,517.49 sqm. A total of 70 apartments will go to owners of apartments in the former danchi complex while the two developers will receive 150 units as compensation for the project. These units will range in size from 50 ~ 130 sqm. Sales of the units are scheduled to begin in Fall, 2012.

The Harajuku danchi apartments were developed and sold to the public by the Government-affiliated Japan Housing Corporation. The official name for the complex was “Harajuku Jyutaku Mansion”. There were a total of 112 apartments and each apartment was a 2DK (2 bedrooms plus a kitchen/dining room) and was 35~37 sqm (376 ~ 398 sqft) in size. The project was planned by architect Tsuhata Shuichi, who studied under Czech architect Antonin Raymon.

Nearby residents oppose the plans for the 18 storey tower, saying it will affect sunlight.
